Ivanka Trump, the eldest daughter of US President Donald Trump and allegedly his favourite child, is one of the most high-profile figureheads in the world.
She holds multiple titles: wife, mother, entrepreneur, author, style icon, America’s first daughter and senior adviser to the leader of the free world. While self-isolating at home, she is utilising social media by hashtagging #TogetherApart, to ease the pressure the Trump administration is facing for its rough handling of the Coronavirus crisis.
Ivanka Trump or Kate Middleton – who would win the style race?
From rich heiress to power voice in the White House, Ivanka Trump transforms herself periodically, with her chameleon-like changes mirrored in her sartorial choices. As people say, dress for the job you want, so what are Ivanka’s wardrobe elections for the top job?
Born in 1981 with a silver spoon in her mouth, Ivanka’s life was thrust into the limelight early. Standing five-foot 10-inches tall, she moonlighted as a part-time model when attending Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut to escape boarding school boredom. She walked for several brands – including Versace, Marc Bouwer, Enrico Coveri and Thierry Mugler – from the age of 15, and appeared in a campaign for Tommy Hilfiger.
In 1998, Ivanka accompanied her mother Ivana to the Royal Ascot races in the UK. She descended on the racecourse in a relatively mature and sophisticated suit-style attire and a low-key fascinator.

Before stepping into business and political spaces, Ivanka, a New York socialite, frequented glamorous parities, outfitted in gorgeous fashion. Here in 2007, she stunned in a Jason Wu gown, showing up at a benefit gala for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
Ivanka married real estate mogul Jared Kushner in a Jewish wedding ceremony at New Jersey’s Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in 2009. The big day dress was a custom-made design by bridal queen Vera Wang, in a classic A-line style that nods to Grace Kelly, with a price tag of US$50,000. She accessorised it with jewellery from her own Ivanka Trump Collection, including the US$130,000 diamond earrings.
After Givenchy, what’s next for Meghan Markle’s wedding dress designer?
The Kushers have three kids together. Ivanka maintained working status during her pregnancies, since conceiving her first baby in 2011. For maternity style, she appeared in public mostly in monochromatic ensembles and business outfits for work, while flaunting rapturous floral designs for her casual outings.
After studying at Georgetown University and transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, which is her father's alma mater, Ivanka joined the family business, focusing on developing the Trump hotel arm. She established her namesake fashion label in 2010, which was shut down in 2018 for her political career.
During this businesswoman period, she channelled an upbeat female boss style that oozed self-confidence while hinting at her fashion know-how with subtle on-trend touches through accessories.
On 21 July, 2016, a big day for the Trump family, Ivanka stepped onto the stage of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, to formally introduce her father Donald J Trump as the Republican nominee for 45th president of the United States.
Was Melania Trump’s wardrobe a hit or a miss in India?
For her speech, Ivanka sported a sleeveless pastel pink sheath dress from her own label. She tweeted a similar design of the high-profile outfit, which cost US$138 and swiftly sold out on various e-commerce websites.
For her father’s inauguration balls in Washington, back in 2017, Ivanka opted for a bedazzling champagne-coloured gown with a long-sleeve sheer design, which is a piece created by American designer Carolina Herrera.
One of her major fashion statement moments – and most favoured “it girl” look – was at her 2019 meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in Austin, Texas. Ivanka displayed a cool and chic fashion sense by wearing head-to-toe beige designs and layering sleek camel coats with wide-brimmed suit pants and pointed toe stilettos.
In June last year, the Trump family paid an official visit to British royal family. One of Ivanka’s most distinctive formal outfits was a pleated skirt ensemble by Alessandra Rich, a label often worn by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, which was accessorised with a white hat by Irish milliner Philip Treacy.
Ivanka attended the G20 Summit with her father in Japan in 2019, which was criticised as an unconventional presence to be standing side-by-side with world leaders. When addressing a women's empowerment event during the summit, the first daughter sported a feminine, fluid, pale pink dress from Italian maison Valentino.
Melania Trump: what does the US first lady even do all day?
On the state visit to India, Ivanka donned a floral splatter print dress by NYC-based designer Proenza Schouler. While her stepmother Melania received wide applause for her fashion diplomacy, Ivanka inadvertently wore a pattern that could be misinterpreted as a reference to the looming pandemic – coronavirus. Twitter went on a frenzy, associating the abstract pattern on Ivanka’s dress with the shape of the virus.
The first daughter once commented in a 2010 interview that “my top three style tips for women at work are context, modesty and femininity”, all of which – whatever your politics – she has clearly mastered skilfully and successfully.
